Can you see what is wrong with this graph?

It switches from being a chart for the UK to one for the US in the 1970s. Why would it do that?

This graph which is actually for UK sugar consumption shows a decline from the 1970s onwards.

The first chart was tweeted by the Managing Editor of the New Scientist as part of an article in support of a sugar tax. Was Rowan Hooper deliberately misusing data or does this kind of thing often get missed in his magazine? Not good either way.
